Labor Day Celebration for us in Louisiana has always been heading to the Beach. We love going for Labor Day because its one last great ways to include fun and sun before the temperatures change!!!!!

Our Labor Day tradition takes place at Sycamore Flats Campground in the Blue Ridge mountains of NC. While the kids wade and explore the river nearby the parents socialize and grill out traditional American favorites. After enjoying a delicious lunch we hike to nearby waterfalls or try our luck at Sliding Rock. It is always a great time of Southern fellowship with three generations of family and I love looking back at the photos and memories we've made there.

For me Labor Day means fabulous food, friends and simply a chance to relax at home. I make a to-die-for cake, sip a gin & tonic & watch my wonderful husband man the grill while the kids splash in the horse's water trough (we don't have a pool!)Friends come & go and I begin making plans for the FALL!

Labor Day is something I couldn't celebrate much in the past. I was a single mom for 9 years and could barely afford ramen noodles. I'm now married to a wonderful man and have so many great new family members to add to all of my existing family. This year is going to be spent with family and good food ....remembering my late grandfather and celebrating all our blessings!

Labor day is a tie when family and friends get together to enjoy each other by being together and cooking with the help of all . the pie ,mac and cheese ribs ,chicken. and all the fixing. just like we love do in the south . and if some strangers stroll up hey we all way have enough to go aroun . feed them too.

Labor day always meant a trip to Shackleford Banks. My grandmother's rule that you can be at the beach without fried chicken meant that we had a picnic with fried chicken, biscuits, fruit, and salt & vinegar chips because they're already salty!

Labor day has always had it's special tradition with my family.Going back to 25 years ago it reminds me of when me and my younger brother and sister's camping out in our living room, trying to stay awake and watching The Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon all night. My brother was diagnosed with M.D. and for some reason us kids believed that by watching the telethon We were in essence helping to cure M.D. Mom would always cook a big meal for us the next day. That tradition carried on till I married but, after that we'd always tune the T.V. in every Labor Day to watch even if we weren't in the same house. We knew we were all watching. It's tradtion for my kids to camp out and do the same. Sadly, my brother succumbed to this disease March of 2009. But we still have "our" tradtion and it's one that we hold close!!

Labor Day to my family means one of the last camping trips of the year. My husband loves cooking over an open fire. BBQ ribs are his specialty. He uses such painstaking care in preparation that it's late evening before we eat. Definately worth the wait!

A couple of years after my husband and I married, we joined a fantasy football league. We would have the draft on the Sunday before Labor Day @ a team members house, with lots of BBQ, snacks and beer. We had 2 teams that were out of towners and we would use speaker phones and two phone lines (one phone/one fax) so everyone could hear what was going on...that's been 20 years ago and a lot of the members have moved in different directions, but with new technology and fantasy draft sites we can all still get together via cell phones and laptops and do a live draft. One year we even did it on a cruise ship! We've moved since then and now we drive from Charlotte to Jacksonville to be with our brother, one of the original members. Beach, cookout, beer, draft! It's all good!!

Labor Day & NC coastal living means squeezing one last lazy beach weekend with family; attending the Oak Island craft festival to checkout local artists & shop for something beachy to savour the summer of Twenty- Ten. If you're lucky enough to live by the sea, then you're lucky enough.

My birthday falls right around Labor day weekend(Sept 3!) so generally speaking, I start planning months in advance so people don't skip town! Fried chicken and funfetti cake with rainbow chip icing are my only "must-haves" other than my loved ones!

It's not Labor Day if the 3 "B"'s aren't involved, Barbecue, Boating or Beach. Living here in North Florida near the beach and river, it always depends on the weather. We do one of two things always. Barbecue! If the river is too choppy for the boat, then we tailgate to Vilano Beach in St. Augustine. Umbrella, grill, dogs (edible and pettable) and burgers! Friends and family come and go, and someone always has fireworks at dusk. Then I feel the one more day syndrome before we go home! That's what we native Floridians do!

Out here in the beautiful state of Washington, Labor Day means a big family get togather in the mountains or ocean! We picnic as a family and everybody brings their favorite food. I make my "wings for a special treat and make ten pounds as five pounds just ain't enough! We have lots of kids and Grandkids and even Greats at this picnic!!

Labor Day is S.D. is the end of summer, days are cooling and getting shorter. It is also the time of the State Fair which is only 50 miles away. We try to get together with the kids and grandkids, take in the Fair, picnic adb enjoy!!!

Labor Day is awesome. We have the long weekend. It is full of cooking out, baking our favorite foods, trying new recipes and watching the new season of college football start. Go Texas Longhorns! The whole family gets together and its full of fun, laughter, and football.

Friends and family always come for the outside activities of hot dogs, chips and corn-on-the cobb. After dark, we crank up the ice cream freezer for the best homemade banana ice cream along with Lemon ice box pie!

Labor Day is always our last big backyard blowout party of the year before the fall weather becomes bad. Good times with friends and family, good eats, Sneaky Petes to drink and a fire in the firepit with S'mores of course!

We reside in the Hawaiian Islands and Labor Day to us means the gathering of friends to celebrate food and share times from the past. It seems as though this is one of the best barbecue cooking and get togethers of the year.

Our whole immediate family gets together in Southern Ohio for a weekend of atv riding, camping and of course good food. The best is breakfast cooked over an open fire in cast iron skillets. Eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns, bisquits & gravy. Can't wait!

HAVING A PICNIC WITH FRIENDS (WOMEN) & HUSBANDS SINCE I'VE KNOW SINCE FIRST GRADE. WE MISS FOUR OF THEM, BUT WE CARRY ON AND TOAST THEM. "THE GIRLS" ARE NOW AGE 71. THESE ARE FRIENDS. WE DO NOTHING SPECIAL EXCEPT ENJOY EACH OTHERS COMPANY.

We have an annual Labor Day barbeque and “Farewell to Summer" party at my sister-in-law’s home. The kid’s splash in the pool, the females talk it up under the shade trees, and the men stand guard over the grill. There’s nothing better than good barbeque enjoyed with family!

Posted by: Holly | 08/31/2010 at 12:01 PM

The best Labor Day was spent packing up and going to the beach for the last gasp of summer before the first day of school. Now it's just a much welcomed day of rest from labor. No Blackberry, no phones, no computers. Unplugged and blissed out.

This year my husband and I are starting the tradition of a huge Labor Day Blowout! My brother-in-law passed away this year on July 7 and his birthday is September 3 (always near the Labor Day Holiday). So we have decided to have the biggest party possible in his memory. We have sent out 66 inviations and are expecting nearly 100 people. We will have smoked chicken, BBQ, and lots of other good food. We will have games available for kids as well as adults and have atv's on hand for all who want to explore our farm. After everyone is fed we will release 40 balloons in my brother-in-law's honor since this would have been his 40th birthday.

Labor Day is usually just the 3 of us so I make a small BBQ -either burgers or pork loin, some corn on the grill and some par-boiled potatoes seasoned with some BBQ rub. I try and cook all the elements on the grill and then I serve some watermelon slices. So cooling after a big meal.

Posted by: Risa Golding | 08/31/2010 at 12:16 PM

Labor Day is always a special time with family and friends. Our celebration location may change but the family, friend, food, fun, and fellowship remain the same. There is always a variety of appetizers that include everyone's favorites one of which is my Mom's Hot Artichoke Dip...talk about fantastic!! There are plenty of meat choices including barbeque chicken, ribs, burgers, sausage, and sometimes shrimp. Then there are the deserts. My, oh my, what a meal! Even better than all the delicious food is the precious time spent with family and friends. We delight in making memories that are treasured for a lifetime.

Labor Day always consist of family, food and wonderful Kentucky Lake in Northwest Tennessee. We are having a Low Country Boil on Saturday and believe it or not I am actually cooking your Championship Boston Butt from your June 2009 edition. I beleive that has even made the cookbook.I learned a long time ago if it's in Southern Living it is winner.

In the Texas Hill Country, it's only natural to head to the rivers on holidays! Labor Day represents the end of our summer kayaking trips down the Guadalupe River. So, we gather to make a day of it on the river, picnicing on BBQ and all the fixin's! Great paddling!

Labor Day weekend arrives and we are ready to work...work that is fun! The traditional Labor Day weekend means displaying the colors, our red, white, and blue American Flag symbolizing our freedoms to celebrate such holidays. Getting ready means manicuring the flower beds to prepare for the
approaching change of the season, weeding, new colorful fall plants, fall tomatoes and the ever important mulching. Next we plan the family gathering: Who will make the potato salad? Who will prepare the greens? Who will say the blessing? We will barbeque the pork chops, the sausage, the chicken. Homemade daiquiris for the adults, and homemade
lemonade for the youngsters will help us chill out, as we share stories of days going by and plan for the up and coming fall holidays. The wrap-up...cold,
juicy, red watermelon (perhaps the last
for this year), and a red, white and blue "different-this-year" surprise homemade dessert completes the feast. And once the cars are gone, the picnic table hosed down, the grill cleaned,...its straight to the pull down stairs. It is now time to look ahead to the colors of fall, vibrant oranges, deep reds...it is time to pull down the fall decorations and move ahead to the kaleidoscopic gifts that are ours... because we are American, because Americans
cherish family, friend, food, fun,and the fruits of all our labors. Labor day ends.
The flag flutters in the warm evening breeze...sounding like
a polite applause to our yearly production. We have staged another happy Labor Day at home.
God willing, next year's
Labor Day will find us same time, same place, different dessert. Same flag.
God Bless America!

Family gathers at local camp house on Lake Wood outside of small town where we live. Cabin has been in family for 30 years and now great-grandkids are sharing in the joy. We go out on Friday and stay thru Monday evening b4 we come in. Tradition is Motzie's Pork Ribs and chicken she marinates in Italian Dressing and then puts on the pit. Or Having her Migas for breakfast. Said she got the recipe from Southern Living for the migas. But being with family is what is all about as now most of grandkids are out of college and on their own. So this is good time for all of us to play b4 it gets cold.

My youngest son's birthday is always around Labor Day so we celebrate both holidays. We usually go out to eat the weekend before and relax on the actual holiday..

Our best Labor Day memories are with hopes that we can get through the weekend WITHOUT a hurricane!! We are a family of 5 and have 3 birthdays all near that holiday weekend!!(actually-- all 3 are on September 8th) During the hurricane season, we are always sure that we have either full butane tanks and/or charcoal for barbecuing, because of power outages with a hurricane. We can always cook up anything from meats to vegetables to good Louisiana seafood on the barbecue pit and not have to worry about not having a stove to cook on. Our best memories are those barbecuing after a major hurricane and enjoying the pool , rather than sweating in a NO air -conditioned home!! And, of course, eating cake for everyone's birthdays!!!!!

MY FATHER LOVED TO FISH; THEREFORE, EACH LABOR DAY, MY MOTHER AND I FRIED FISH. WE HAD SLAW AS A SIDE DISH AND EACH YEAR THE RECIPE CHANGED. MY CHILDREN WOULD INVITE FRIENDS AND WE WOULD EAT FISH AND MORE FISH. I MISS THAT TIME NOW, BECAUSE MY DAD IS GONE AND NO ONE FISHES ANYMORE.

For many, Labor Day means a day off and the end of summer. It's tradition in my family to go to the park by the lake and have a big cookout with family and friends. We play outside games such as balloon toss and volleyball. It's great to be together.

My labor day tradition is going over to my sisters who is 78. All her kids, grandkids, great grankids, and friends, all just get together and pig out. The grill is always going, everyone brings a dish of some sort, and we all have a nice time chatting, laughing and even sometimes sad for all the ones who have passed on. The house is full and my sisters day is a good one, for its another year she is on this earth with us and we have more pictures to remember and cherish.

We live in the far west panhandle of Western Maryland. My husband and our friends are all professors at a local university so for a end of summer bash we get together at our one friends open field, next to their log home. My husband and his friend built a log fire pit years ago and seating was made by the owners of log benches and stools. We gather around 4:00 for a picnic of burgers, both meat and meatless, salads of all kinds made with the freshest vegetables that are bountiful from local gardens, beans, and homemade fruit pies. One of our other friends makes homemade wine to die for so we all have to sample. A few of the gang play guitar so after the music the "spud gun" comes out to see who can fire the potato the farthest. Then we settle back to enjoy the stars in the heaven that look as big as saucers. A great way to end the summer, friends, good food and nature. Nothing better!

Labor Day is our last "hoorah" of the summer. I spend Sunday smoking BBQ pork and ribs to prepare for the big event. My entire family meets at the lake for lunch and the rest of the afternoon is spent on the water--boating, swimming and Sea-Doo-ing. We make ice cream and lounge around until after dark enjoying the whole event before returning to work and school the next day. It is an event we all look forward to and enjoy each year.

Our family will be paticipating in a 5 & 10 mile walk/run. This is for a memorial foundation of a relative who passed away with MS. The money raised is used to build handicap ramps, etc. We also participate in a BBQ fundraiser for the foundation as well, which is done the week before Labor Day. This is such a wonderful thing! Then we BBQ ribs, chicken, burgers, brisket, or whatever. My husband is the best! God is truly good to us.

Labor Day Grill-out is a special day for our elderly and disabled community. Many of us do not have family, but on Labor day everyone gets outside to enjoy fellowship and grilled foods from burgers, chicken, brats, and fish to corn and zucchini. Everyone pitches in!

Posted by: Greer | 09/01/2010 at 08:14 AM

Labor day is the coming together of my remaining family, my mom, sister, brother, their kids and mine. Reminiscing of relatives who have passed on and cooking the recipes passed down and thanking God for all our blessings.

Labor day falls close to my oldest son's birthday so we celebrate with the menu of his choice. This year it's breakfast! We'll share updates and stories over french toast, bacon *and* sausage - with cherry pie for dessert! No matter what the menu, it tastes best because we're together again.

Posted by: Kelly | 09/01/2010 at 09:53 AM

This Labor Day is a very special one because we were married on Labor Day, 1950. We will celebrate with the usual, Barbeque sandwichs, potato salad, cole slaw, and my daughters famous baked beans. My son-in-law always says there is no one that makes potato salad and cole slaw like me.

Labor Day weekend is when the Great Allentown Fair (PA) is, so the holiday isn't complete with out a visit or two. The other part of the holiday we make steak on the grill with potato and onion packets, corn on the cob, and watermelon.

For us, Labor Day weekend means extra time to get things done around the house and then party with our neighborhood on Sunday. One neighbor throws a huge party that everyone brings their favorite food to. Mondays we have a small family cookout and recover from the long weekend. This year I am making a fresh fruit tart for the party, and will bbq something on Monday for the family.

Labor Day to us is family and friends and the last fling of summer. We always have a huge pool/cookout party. We always have a variety of meats grilling (hamburgers, steaks, chicken and fish) and usually something in the smoker. Everyone brings a side dish or dessert. We have all the yard games set up and usually end the evening with fireworks. Usually i have to start kicking everyone out because they dont want to leave! We ALWAYS look forward to this holiday! Happy Labor Day everyone at Southern Living!

Given the chance of a hurricane on the coast, we're celebrating here in Missouri with some Pat O'Brien's Hurricanes of our own! Although due to the cooler weather, we can't have our family swimming party, but we're cooking on the grill, drinking and (the best part) enjoying our family and friends!

Labor Day is all about saying goodbye to summer and hello to fall and college football! That means a quick drive over to Marina Del Rey to BBQ with my extended family. Nothing like an ocean breeze while sitting on the patio grilling lobster tails, chicken, ribs & burgers. Add a little New Orleans style potato salad, baked beans and for dessert a Georgia peach cobbler. Lots of signature drinks served up to catch a game or two on TV. Life is good!

My elderly Italian father has one request this year: authentic Spaghetti and Meatballs. This certainly goes against the Labor Day BBQ norm, doesn't it? However, the request led me to think about the diversity of the amazing people who have labored to build this country. My fathers' mother was an immigrant through Ellis Island. Her hard labor as a hat maker sustained 7 children, each one growing to be a successful adult. Spaghetti and Meatballs? No problem, Papa, and thank you, America, for your resilient and diverse, hard working people.

I'm so excited for Labor Day!! I've always been a big BBQ fanatic (i started my younger years in Texas because my dad was in the US Air Force). Since then we moved allover the states to places that weren't so big on BBQ and I could never really get my fix. Now, THANKFULLY, I've settled down in Georgia and BBQ is all around me. I'm currently pregnant with my 2nd child and BBQ has been all i've been craving. I guess I'm just really thankful that between sharing recipes with southerners again, and having BBQ Joints all around, i can get my fill of that tangy, tastey, tantalizing, meat!!!

Labor Day weekend is always our wedding anniversary. This year it'll be 16 years! We choose to celebrate it with our two children, who wouldn't be here if we hadn't made the right choice that day. This weekend we're headed to Glendale, KY for some shopping and lunch, and then we'll sit down and cheer on the KY Wildcats against Louisville. Go cats!

One of my goals in life is to find the perfect BBQ. I'm also looking for the perfect coleslaw and the perfect macaroni and cheese...

One of my goals in life is to find the perfect BBQ, and I'll spend Labor Day continuing the search. I'm also looking for the perfect coleslaw and the perfect macaroni and cheese...

There is a privately owned "swimming hole" in our area and the family who owns it hosts a "Splash" for the community every Labor Day. Families can swim in the creek and there is even a rope swing and a rock bluff for those who dare to be more adventuresome. There is a potluck supper, always with bar-be-que and all the trimmings. A donation is collected during the event to help with upkeep for the local cemetary. This "swimming hole" and Labor Day Splash has been a favorite meeting place for many years for many people.

Living in Texas, to BBQ is to have a kitchen outdoors 10 months out of the year...a cookbook is the accessory

well labor day was just another excuse to barbeque here in texas its a part of our hispanic culture and always a family event where everyone is involved in one way or another and the highlight of the day is when we all get to sit down to enjoy the fruits of our labor.we fire up the smoker grill early and also use its fire box to make the coals for the direct heat grill where we will cook the beef fajitas that have been marinating over night in our special lime based marinade and our corn & grilled onions and chicken and in the smoker go our baby back ribs and a brisket all the while i am guarding the grills mom is doing her magic in the kitchen with the boracho beans and the mexican rice guacamole salad and the pico de gallo along with some 2 different kinds of roasted salsa for the die hard salsa fans.then there is is the customary walk thru by my father to make sure we didnt forget his favorite grilled jumbo prawns with a slice of jalapeno and monterrey jack cheese in the middle and wraped in bacon and just when they are almost ready we cover them in a honey chipolte barbeque sauce yes they disappear as soon as they are ready with dad always getting the first few. yes there are a few beers and also some southern sweet tea or lemonade and desert omg who has room but always to keep with the healthy eating we have been doing is a giant bowl of sliced fruits from apples to peaches to mangoes grapes jicama pineapple cantalope and honey dew all mixed and a spicy chile blend powder is added and lots of fresh lime juice its sweet sour and spicy and loved by all its a family event shared by family and friends and like i said its on laborday or any other day we all join in one accord to enjoy each others company and to enjoy the foods we grew up loving .
