OK, I love to find a great deal and save money. Grocery shopping and cooking are a part of my job here at Southern Living. We try to watch our grocery costs as we pass on wonderful recipes that keep the home cooks budget in mind. This is very important to me at home, too.

So, when my young married daughter with two small children called and told me that she had been to the grocery store and had purchased over $300 worth of groceries and essentials for $35, I did what anyone would have done.  I told her to prove it!!!

She sent me her receipt and sure enough it was true. She said that she had done it all with coupons, a special store bonus card, and in-store specials. Well, this past Sunday I diligently clipped out all the coupons in the paper and stuffed them in an envelope. Armed with my trusty little money savers, I headed for the local mega-mart.  By the time I finally made it to the check out, I had saved a whopping $4 on my $70 bill and had spent over an hour fumbling through that envelope. There has got to be a system that I'm missing--not to mention some way to organize these things!!  What are your money saving and organizing tips?

I think you do have to be really good a coupons to pull that off. 2 cool things about grocery stores I know that helps is that Publix will honor any other grocery store coupon. Wal-Mart will match any circular price, you just have to be armed with your circulars to get the price. It's not easy...don't get frustrated.

Shop Publix's "Buy One Get One Free" sales. Best part is that you don't have buy two items, you can just buy one for half the price.

Ha. This is why I don't bother to coupon. My experience exactly.

Wow... $300 worth of groceries for $35! That's impressive!
I agree with Anna, Publix has some great "Buy One Get One Free" deals, and if you go on Sundays and/or Mondays be sure to ask the workers about the Mystery Penny Item!

Target has great plastic file-like coupon organizers in lots of colors for $3.99. Best part...they are "coupon" size, can hold hundreds of clipped coupons and fit in your purse like a wallet! I organize mine by grocery aisle.

That's how moms should budget their money ;D Btw, you can sort the coupons by store or by date validity.

So if you saw your daughter's receipt, why didn't you know what she bought and how she saved so much so you could do it also?

This post is extremely helpful. In a time where grocery prices are rising at rapid rates, your tips will help me get through.

Why didn't you try to replicate your daughters spending to see how much you could save. Krogers doubles and triples coupons further north in the south they took that benefit away from us and gave us .10cents off a gallon of gas for every 100 points. I would rather have the double and tripling of coupons any day than the gas.
