Chef John Currence does it right at this Oxford hot spot.  If you're looking for a special night out while in town, then this James Beard Award nominee (for Best Chef in the South) is the man to see.

We don’t fry chicken at home, so that’s what I order at City Grocery.  Their super-crispy batter fried chicken thighs lean up against country ham and roasted corn spoonbread.  To push things right over the top, the “gravy” is a Louisiana hot sauce beurre blanc (aka butter sauce).

If I’m hankerin’ for red meat, I indulge in the prime tenderloin filet.  The tender grilled steak is paired with grilled onion-smashed potatoes and a roasted mushroom wine sauce.  One of my favorite wines on their list is the Celler Marti Fabra Seleccio Vinyes Velles from Spain.  This robust, off-the-beaten path red may be a mouthful to say, but it definitely delivers on flavor and value.  Don’t miss it.  152 Courthouse Square, Oxford, MS; (662-232-8080).  http://www.citygroceryonline.com/

For the record, I also love L&M's Kitchen and Salumeria.  Chef/owner Dan Latham is incredibly gifted.  I hope to write about the restaurant soon.

L & M's was my favorite, but I just found out that they closed! Anyone know what happened?
